How Long Can Mice Survive Without Food?

Mice typically rely on a consistent food supply to sustain their high metabolism. Without access to food or water, a mouse may survive for only 2 to 4 days, though some can last up to a week if water is available. Their survival time is influenced by various factors, including access to water, environmental conditions, and body reserves.

Unlike larger mammals, mice cannot store large amounts of fat, making them highly dependent on frequent meals. If food is scarce, they become more aggressive in seeking it, which can increase their risk of entering commercial or domestic premises.

Factors Affecting a Mouse’s Survival Without Food

1. Water Availability

While mice can typically go for 2 – 4 days without food, they may survive longer if there’s a good supply of water available.

Conversely, if the mouse has access to only food but no water, it can typically survive for several weeks because mice can hydrate relatively well from the moisture within the food that they consume.

2. Temperature and Environment

Colder environments force mice to use more energy to maintain body heat, shortening their survival time, while a warm, sheltered environment may extend their lifespan slightly in the absence of food. However, the opposite temperature extreme can shorten lifespan, as very high temperatures can contribute to more rapid dehydration.

3. Age and Health

Younger and healthier mice have better energy reserves than older or weaker mice. If a mouse has been malnourished before food deprivation, it will perish more quickly, where as a well fed, healthy mouse will last longer upon the onset of famine.

4. Access to Alternative Food Sources

Even in the absence of a primary food source, mice are highly resourceful. They may consume non-food items like paper, insects, or even faeces to extract any possible nutrients. When we discuss food deprivation, we refer to all food sources. If mice can resort to some other material as a food source it can be sufficient to extend their lifespan indefinitely. So, if you are in a situation where you are thinking about starving out an infestation of mice, think again.

What This Means for You

A business or individual dealing with a mouse infestation, you should understand that simply removing food sources won’t immediately eliminate the problem. Mice will aggressively seek alternative food supplies and may become bolder, venturing into new areas in search of sustenance.

In addition to starving mice of a primary food source, it’s always recommended to provide mice with poison baits and baited traps as the only easily available dining option. The absence of food will force mice toward these option and ultimately result in their demise.

Steps to Prevent Mice from Thriving

  • Eliminate Food Sources: Store all food in sealed containers and remove crumbs or spills immediately and meticulously removing all traces of food, ensuring absolutely nothing is available for the mice.
  • Cut Off Water Access: Fix leaks and remove standing water sources. Check for and clean away condensation on pipes and around windows.
  • Block Entry Points: Mice can squeeze through gaps as small as 6mm, so sealing potential entryways is crucial. Use wire wool to stuff gaps closed or patch them with wire mesh sheets.
  • Implement Proactive Pest Control Measures: Regular monitoring and professional pest control services can prevent infestations from taking hold.
