What are Bed bugs
Bed bugs can spread quickly to new locations as they travel on their victims, or in their luggage. As bed bugs are masters at hiding, they are almost impossible to get rid of without expert treatment, which means numbers can multiply relatively easily.
- Bites on the Skin: Red, itchy spots that appear overnight, often in clusters or lines. They may develop into red welts as seen in the photo.
- Blood Stains or Faecal Spots: Small rust-coloured stains or dark spots on bed linens, mattresses, or furniture.
- Shed Skins and Eggs: Finding shed skins or tiny white eggs around bed frames, seams, and crevices.
- Unpleasant Odour: A musty, sweet smell can develop in heavy infestations.
If you notice any of these signs, professional inspection is advised.
Why professional treatment is the solution
Other bed bug pest control companies rely on chemical treatments for bed bugs, but chemicals are significantly less effective than heat because chemicals do not destroy bed bug eggs. In addition, many adult bed bugs have developed an immunity to common chemical insecticides. Another shortfall of chemicals is that they can’t be used with trained sniffer dogs for safety reasons, so any pest control technician using chemicals needs to search and try and find all of the bed bugs by sight alone, which is an almost impossible task.

Bed bug treatment
Whole room heat treatment
Heat treatment is a powerful, chemical-free solution that effectively eradicates bed bugs at all life stages by raising room temperatures to lethal levels. This method is safe, fast, eco-friendly, and ensures complete bed bug extermination in a single visit, making it ideal for all confirmed bed bug infestations. To learn more about how heat treatment works and its benefits, click the button below.
Canine bed bug detection
Our trained detection dogs provide an accurate and efficient way to locate bed bugs, even in the most hidden areas. Once located, the bed bugs are treated with localised heat by the certified Merlin technician. The dog’s keen sense of smell enables early detection, meaning we can proactively search an entire building for bedbugs and their eggs at regular intervals, and destroy all bed bugs before the problem escalates into a bitten customer lodging a complaint.

Frequently asked questions
What do bed bugs look like?
Bed bugs are small, 2-5mm long, with a flat reddish-brown body that can slip into paper-thin cracks. They have well-developed mouth parts which they swing out from their bodies before feeding on blood.
How quickly do bed bugs multiply?
Where do bed bugs live?
Bed bugs thrive in the bedroom but can be found anywhere people come to rest. They create generations between sheets, in mattress seams and in bedstead crevices. They prefer not to travel far for their blood meals, so they are also likely to be found close to a host.
Although bed bugs prefer to feed during the night when humans are asleep, they are also opportunistic and will feed on hosts while awake. Therefore, bed bug infestations are often found in hotels, hospitals, aeroplanes, trains and buses.
Bed bugs are very hardy. They are able to survive 18 months without food and travel vast distances in luggage and on modes of transportation until they reach a meal.
What are the signs of bed bug infestation?
- Severely itchy bites, in small groups of three or four.
- Blood spots on bedclothes. Bed bugs feed on blood for a full 15 minutes, if they are accidentally squashed, they leave a stain.
- Black spots on sheets from their excrement.
- A nasty musty odour is detectable when the infestation is particularly serious.
- Moulted skins. As they grow towards maturity, the nymphs shed their skins.
- Bed bug eggs. An expert eye will detect egg clusters in crevices and cracks.
Does a bed bug infestation need controlling?
Bed bugs bite and are therefore unwelcomed guests in a home. However, bed bugs can also destroy a commercial enterprise’s reputation.
- Bed bug bites are nasty. They itch for several days and in some cases cause an allergic reaction. The bites appear in clusters all over the body.
- The bites cause sleeplessness and anxiety in their hosts.
- If the bites are constantly scratched, then there will be risk of infection.
- A bad attack of biting can cause anaemia and iron deficiency.
- Bed bugs can cause the downfall of commercial premises, such as hotels and ruin the reputation of hospitals. There have been numerous cases of people suing proprietors after an attack.
- Bed bugs are difficult to get rid of and there is no single effective method. An integrated approach to the problem is needed as well as careful monitoring of effectiveness over time.
When can you get here?
At Merlin, we completely understand the need for a swift response to pest control issues. We will always speak to you and find the best time for us to attend. If it's an emergency, we would expect to be there the next working day, or if we have the operatives near your business, we would attend the same day if you could accommodate this. We will always work alongside you to provide the best timings for our visits.
How much does the treatment cost?
This is dependent on the type of work and the severity of the problem. It is very difficult to give pre-pricing, even as a general guide, as the true extent of the issue will only be evident once surveyed and looked at. This is why, as a business, we do not charge for our surveys. The survey stage is also an opportunity to get to know you and your site and explore the problem. Pest control is a bespoke service; one size doesn't fit all. Each pest control offering is different, and is tailored to the site in question.
What do I have to do?
In most cases, before we attend, nothing. It’s only when we have attended the site for the in-depth, free-of-charge survey that we can recommend any points that you may need to do. This can take various forms, from a simple quick clear of clutter to removing shrubs and bushes that are providing harbourage and shelter for pests. But again, no two sites are the same, and understanding the site and its requirements is key to a successful pest control process.
How long will it take to resolve the issue?
It depends on the particular situation. We can confirm this after we have carried out a free, no-obligation site evaluation.
Are there any guarantees?
Yes. We provide either a one, or three-month guarantee depending on the treatment method used. We also guarantee that all work will be carried out by a BPCA certified pest control technician.
