Ants are a nuisance that many gardeners struggle with. Here are some excellent methods for repelling or killing ants without harming your plant environment if you want to understand how to get rid of ants in the garden without killing plants.

  • Eliminate aphids and other insects that feed on tree sap. Ants won’t stay around to gather honeydew if you do this.
  • Spread fake sweeteners in the vicinity of the ants. According to reports, this kills ants (which might make you reconsider adding the stuff to your coffee).
Scatter ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper. Ants may be repelled but not harmed by this.
  • Near routes and nests, scatter food-grade diatomaceous earth. This fine powder dehydrates ants as well as slugs and cockroaches and is made from fossilized hard-shelled algae known as diatoms. But people can use it without any risk. (Note: To be successful, it must stay dry and may take a few weeks to eliminate ants.)
  • Set up a poison trap with sugar and borax (or boric acid). Numerous do-it-yourself pest poison formulas based on borax and boric acid can be found online with a quick Google search. Although borax and boric acid are natural substances, they are harmful to both humans and animals, so handle them with caution.
  • Pour boiling water on the anthill. Naturally, this method only works if you are aware of the location of the ant colony. Also, keep in mind that ants construct their homes to endure flooding and rain. Therefore, it can take numerous attempts to kill the queen (and wipe out the colony).

What’s the difference between red ants and black ants in the UK?

The color is the primary distinction between red and black ants. There are 24 species of black ants, but the red ant is merely one among many in a broader group. Some of the more common red ants are aggressive toward its victim and when it bites, it releases a toxin.

If red ants want to use black ants as food, they will assault them. A black ant can annihilate a red ant even though it doesn’t inject venom.

What are flying ants?

Flying ants, also known as alates, are fertile male and female ants who only leave the nest to breed and find new colonies. Swarms are formed when winged queen ants and male ants  from different colonies reproduce in the air.

Flying Ant Day is an annual event that takes place during the summer. Flying ants can be found on any warm, calm day in the UK, but most flying ant activity seems to occur during a particular week in July. To learn more about flying ant day read this article.

What repels ants?

The chemicals used to keep ants away from your home are called repellents. Some people use them regularly. Find out which repellents are most effective if you want to get rid of ants permanently.

The following are some of the most widely used ant repellents:

Boric acid – This chemical is often used to prevent ants from getting into food storage areas. It is also useful for killing ants once they’ve made their way inside.

Citronella – A natural plant extract that acts as an insecticide. It smells good and works great at keeping ants out of your kitchen.

Essential oils – Essential oils such as peppermint, clove, and citrus oil may act as a deterrent. You can get them online or at local stores.

Formic acid – Formic acid is a liquid that comes from ants’ waste. You can spray it directly onto the ants and it kills them instantly.

Hydrogen peroxide – Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful bleach. It is relatively safe for humans to handle.

Powdered charcoal – Charcoal is a porous form of carbon. It absorbs odors and keeps the air clean. Use it to kill ants before they make their way indoors.

You can combine these different methods to create your own personal pest control plan.

What attracts ants?

Ants are attracted to food sources. Ants can smell the pheromones of other ants from a distance. The scent is released through their antennae and it travels up into the brain where they interpret what it means. It means that they should follow the scent because their comrade ant has found food.

Sugar is the food that ants are most drawn to. Unfortunately, sugar may be found in the majority of foods and drinks. They enjoy chowing down on sweet-smelling foods and beverages that contain high fructose corn syrup. Ants benefit greatly from food spills and crumbs, and they favour any food that has a strong smell. In addition, ants also enjoy eating dead insects, and other organic debris, such as leaves, as well as oil and grease.

How big is a colony of ants?

Normal ant colonies typically contain between 1,000 and 100,000 ants, while supercolonies can contain millions of ants living together.

Why do ants suddenly appear?

If you notice hundreds of ants all over the place, the reason might be that they’re looking for shelter after a rainstorm. They might also be out for their nuptial flight, where young queens mate mid-air before finding a new home. Most likely, they could just be out searching for food.

Where do ants go in the winter?

In preparation for the winter season, ants stay in their colonies, normally underground, or under the bark of trees. They hibernate with their colonies and maintain body heat by gathering in groups and protecting the queen, the source of life for their entire colony.

What happens if you don’t remove ants?

Depending on the type of ant, you might get bitten. For example, common red ants bite. Normally, it’s black ants that like to enter homes. Black ants don’t bite. But they do forage for food and it’s not pleasant having a colony of ants running around your kitchen and finding them in your food. If you don’t get rid of them the problem may spread as the queen continues to lay eggs.

One ant to really watch out for is Pharaoh ants. Pharaoh ants carry disease, but fortunately they are not very common. If you have Pharaoh ants, it would be best to throw out your food to avoid getting sick. Pharaoh ants also have a nasty bite, so it’s best to call in the pros.
