Why cockroaches are a problem
Cockroaches thrive in dark, damp areas, making it difficult to detect early signs of infestation. Their rapid reproduction also means that a small problem can quickly escalate, potentially leading to regulatory violations and damaging a business’s reputation.
Signs of a cockroach infestation can include:
- Droppings: Small, black droppings resembling coffee grounds or pepper, often found in areas where cockroaches hide.
- Egg Cases (Oothecae): Brown, oval-shaped egg sacs left behind in hidden areas.
- Unpleasant Odor: A damp, musty or oily smell, especially in larger infestations.
- Live Cockroaches: Seeing cockroaches during the day may indicate a significant infestation, as they are usually nocturnal.
Why professional treatment is the solution
Professional pest control services use targeted treatments, including baiting, insecticides, and growth regulators, to eliminate all life stages of cockroaches. Additionally, our experts can identify the source of the infestation and implement measures to prevent future issues.

Why choose Merlin Environmental
Advanced solutions
For cockroach control, pest technicians often use targeted insecticide applications, baiting, and traps. Insecticides are typically applied to high-risk areas like cracks, crevices, and entry points, ensuring direct impact on hidden populations. Gel baits attract cockroaches to feed and spread the treatment throughout their colony, while sticky traps help monitor infestations. Non-toxic options for cockroach control include heat treatments. Heat treatments elevate temperatures in infested areas to lethal levels, killing cockroaches without chemicals. These methods are effective and safe alternatives for sensitive environments where chemical exposure is a concern.
No interruption
Merlin Pest Control services are specifically designed to minimise disruption to business operations. We offer flexible out-of-hours visits to ensure treatments are carried out when the premises are not busy, maintaining business continuity. Additionally, Merlin can offer discreet, unmarked vans for customers who don’t want any attention being drawn to pest control activities. This careful approach allows businesses to stay pest-free without alarming customers or interrupting daily activities, ensuring a seamless, professional experience.
Highly effective
At Merlin, we use the most effective solutions to eradicate cockroaches, tailored to your business’s specific needs. While we can deploy powerful insecticides and insect growth regulators for cockroach control, we can also provide non-toxic alternatives like whole-room heat treatment, which promote a safer environment without compromising effectiveness. For businesses prioritising eco-friendly or chemical-free methods, our team can adapt the treatment plan, while still achieving exceptional results.

Frequently asked questions
What do German cockroaches look like?
German cockroaches are small, measuring only 0.51 inches across and 0.63 inches long. They are brown with two black stripes that stretch downwards behind their heads. They have wings, but cannot fly and long waving antennae.
How quickly do German cockroaches multiply?
Where do German cockroaches live?
As the German cockroach is so little it can live in the tiniest of cracks. Door hinges, ceiling and floor joints, electronic devices, furniture joints and even under labels on cans and jars are all popular hiding places for them. German cockroaches don’t like the cold so they tend to find warm indoor homes with plenty of food and water.
What are the signs of a German cockroach infestation?
- When excited or afraid, German cockroaches give off a nasty smell.
- As they multiply so quickly, you will see them. There is no such thing as only one cockroach.
- They look like small black spots and are not always easy to see.
- Cockroaches shed their skins; you will come across crisp brown material.
- Dead cockroaches.
- Empty egg cases are small, brown, and purse-shaped.
Does a German cockroach infestation need controlling?
Yes. Due to their rate of reproduction a small infestation can get out of control very speedily.
- As German cockroaches prefer to frequent sewers and rubbish bins, they are serious carriers of germs. These germs attach themselves to the cockroach body and are then transferred to human surfaces such as plates, cutlery, and tabletops.
- German cockroaches spread an impressive range of illnesses. These include salmonella, E. Coli, and Streptococcus.
- Worm eggs are also spread by cockroaches, such as hookworms, pinworms and even tapeworms.
- German cockroaches quickly become resistant to commercial aerosols and poisons.
- They will eat a diverse amount of food. As well as their preferred options, which are sweet, meaty, or greasy, they will also eat toothpaste, soap, and glue. It is difficult to starve them out!
When can you get here?
At Merlin, we completely understand the need for a swift response to pest control issues. We will always speak to you and find the best time for us to attend. If it's an emergency, we would expect to be there the next working day, or if we have the operatives near your business, we would attend the same day if you could accommodate this. We will always work alongside you to provide the best timings for our visits.
How much does the treatment cost?
This is dependent on the type of work and the severity of the problem. It is very difficult to give pre-pricing, even as a general guide, as the true extent of the issue will only be evident once surveyed and looked at. This is why, as a business, we do not charge for our surveys. The survey stage is also an opportunity to get to know you and your site and explore the problem. Pest control is a bespoke service; one size doesn't fit all. Each pest control offering is different, and is tailored to the site in question.
What do I have to do?
In most cases, before we attend, nothing. It’s only when we have attended the site for the in-depth, free-of-charge survey that we can recommend any points that you may need to do. This can take various forms, from a simple quick clear of clutter to removing shrubs and bushes that are providing harbourage and shelter for pests. But again, no two sites are the same, and understanding the site and its requirements is key to a successful pest control process.
How long will it take to resolve the issue?
It depends on the particular situation. We can confirm this after we have carried out a free, no-obligation site evaluation.
Are there any guarantees?
Yes. We provide either a one, or three-month guarantee depending on the treatment method used. We also guarantee that all work will be carried out by a BPCA certified pest control technician.
