Why mice are a problem

Mice pose serious issues for businesses, especially those handling food or sensitive goods. They contaminate surfaces, food supplies, and packaging with droppings and urine, which can lead to health violations and product spoilage.

Mice also chew through wiring, insulation, and structural materials, causing fire hazards and expensive repairs. A visible mouse problem can damage a business’s reputation, making professional control essential.

Signs of mice

Here are some common signs of a mouse infestation:

  • Droppings found near food, storage areas, or along walls.
  • Gnaw marks on packaging, furniture, or wiring.
  • Scratching noises within walls or ceilings, especially at night.
  • Footprints or tail marks in dusty areas.
  • A noticeable musty odour in enclosed spaces.

Why professional treatment is the solution

Professional intervention is crucial as mice reproduce quickly, turning minor infestations into large ones in a short time.

DIY methods often fail to address hidden nests and entry points, leading to re-infestation. Professional pest control ensures thorough inspection, effective removal, and prevention techniques, safeguarding health and property.

Frequently asked questions

What do mice look like?

Mice have grey-brown fur and a long pink tail. They are small in body size measuring only 2 inches, which means they can get through spaces of just a quarter of an inch. They have large ears with good hearing and small black eyes that see better in the dark than in the day.

How quickly do mice multiply?

A female mouse will live for a year, during which she will produce 10 litters of up to 12 pups. Mice start reproducing at two months.

Where do mice live?

Mice feed throughout the day and so always build their nests near food. Kitchens in the home or in offices are attractive propositions for mice, as are restaurants, supermarkets, food storage facilities and any other place where food litter might be found.

What are the signs of a mouse infestation?

  • Droppings, these are small dark pellets which they scatter everywhere. One mouse drops 80 pellets per day.
  • Holes and teeth marks on food packaging, plastic bin bags, and skirting boards.
  • If you see a mouse, then you can guarantee that it has a family and nest nearby.
  • Check your toaster! Mice love the crumbs that collect in them. Tip your toaster out regularly to check for droppings.
  • A musky foul smell that you can’t get rid of? A male mouse will use its noxious-smelling urine to mark out its territory.
  • Shredded paper or material. Mice use these shreds to make their beds.
  • Scratching, scampering and shredding sounds, day or night, are the telltale sounds of a mouse infestation.

Does a mouse infestation need controlling?

Yes. Mice are unhygienic and pose a serious health risk. As they multiply so speedily, it is important that the infestation is addressed immediately. Here are specific reasons why:

  • Mice carry life-threatening diseases including, Murine Typhus, Salmonella and Hantavirus.
  • Mouse urine which dries on dust, is inhaled by humans and causes asthma and allergies. This is particularly dangerous for small children.
  • Once a mouse has entered your food store, it will defecate all over your food and contaminate it.
  • Mice often chew through electricity cables and wires causing fire hazards and extensive damage.
  • Mice carry fleas, ticks and mites.
  • Mice are attracted to warmth, and you can find their nests in sofas and mattresses as well as behind walls and under floorboards.

When can you get here?

At Merlin, we completely understand the need for a swift response to pest control issues. We will always speak to you and find the best time for us to attend. If it's an emergency, we would expect to be there the next working day, or if we have the operatives near your business, we would attend the same day if you could accommodate this. We will always work alongside you to provide the best timings for our visits.

How much does the treatment cost?

This is dependent on the type of work and the severity of the problem. It is very difficult to give pre-pricing, even as a general guide, as the true extent of the issue will only be evident once surveyed and looked at. This is why, as a business, we do not charge for our surveys. The survey stage is also an opportunity to get to know you and your site and explore the problem. Pest control is a bespoke service; one size doesn't fit all. Each pest control offering is different, and is tailored to the site in question.

What do I have to do?

In most cases, before we attend, nothing. It’s only when we have attended the site for the in-depth, free-of-charge survey that we can recommend any points that you may need to do. This can take various forms, from a simple quick clear of clutter to removing shrubs and bushes that are providing harbourage and shelter for pests. But again, no two sites are the same, and understanding the site and its requirements is key to a successful pest control process.

How long will it take to resolve the issue?

It depends on the particular situation. We can confirm this after we have carried out a free, no-obligation site evaluation.

Are there any guarantees?

Yes. We provide either a one, or three-month guarantee depending on the treatment method used. We also guarantee that all work will be carried out by a BPCA certified pest control technician.
