About rats in the UK

Knowing you have a rat problem can be distressing, so it’s best to do everything you can to try and avoid the situation in the first place. The best way to deter rats is to deny them access to food, water and shelter. Unlike mice, rats need daily access to a water source. They’re renowned for eating just about anything. Black rats are good climbers and will happily inhabit raised spaces. Whilst brown rats can climb, they prefer to build burrows, particularly near or beneath solid structures like warehouses, storage sheds, garages and walls. They are very adept at swimming in sewers and drain systems, making the most of any damaged pipework. Both species will gnaw at gaps to enlarge them enough for easy entry.
If you’ve seen signs of rats, such as gnawing or droppings, it may indicate a serious infestation. Expert targeted non-toxic treatments are the safest, quickest and most effective way to get rid of rats from your property and make sure they don’t come back. At Merlin, we can carry out a professional survey for free, where we’ll identify the extent of infestation and potential access points used by the rats. We can then deliver a fast, effective and non-toxic treatment to remove the rats. Finally, we’ll assist in proofing all access points to prevent future infestations. All our work is carried out by British Pest Control Association (BPCA) Certified Technicians.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do rats look like?

Rats have brownish grey fur and a long furless tail. Their bodies extend to 6-8 inches, however they are able to compress their bodies to enter a 1.5 inch space. Rats have extremely sharp teeth that continue to grow throughout their lives. They file down their teeth by constant gnawing.

How fast do rats multiply?

A female rat will live for a year, during which she will produce 5 litters of 6 to 8 young.

Where do rats live?

Rats live underground in sewers and drains, in attic spaces, around pipes, near rubbish stores and between walls.

What are the signs of a rat infestation?

  • Droppings, these are spindle shaped and the size of an olive pip.
  • Holes and teeth marks on packaging, piping, skirting boards, wooden floorboards.
  • Spotting a rat. If you see one rat, chances are it’s got a family tucked away nearby.
  • Smear marks along walls, these are caused by the grease in rat fur.
  • Scratching and scampering sounds in the night. Rats conduct their business after dark.

What to do about rats?

Yes. Rats pose a serious threat and it is vital that an infestation be addressed immediately.
Here are the reasons why:

  • Rats carry life-threatening diseases including, Murine Typhus, Salmonella, Leptospirosis and Hantavirus to name but few!
  • A trapped rat will bite. This is uncommon, but can happen. It is likely that a rat bite will transmit a disease.
  • Rats can gnaw through metal and damage gas and water pipes causing leakage that is both dangerous and expensive to fix. They also chew through electricity cables causing fire hazards.
  • Rats can burrow under buildings and walls undermining their foundations.
  • Rats are intelligent problem solvers. They will quickly find another entry point when one is blocked up and easily identify and avoid commercially bought poison.

When can you get here?

At Merlin, we completely understand the need for a swift response to pest control issues. We will always speak to you and find the best time for us to attend. If it's an emergency, we would expect to be there the next working day, or if we have the operatives near your business, we would attend the same day if you could accommodate this. We will always work alongside you to provide the best timings for our visits.

How much does the treatment cost?

This is dependent on the type of work and the severity of the problem. It is very difficult to give pre-pricing, even as a general guide, as the true extent of the issue will only be evident once surveyed and looked at. This is why, as a business, we do not charge for our surveys. The survey stage is also an opportunity to get to know you and your site and explore the problem. Pest control is a bespoke service; one size doesn't fit all. Each pest control offering is different, and is tailored to the site in question.

What do I have to do?

In most cases, before we attend, nothing. It’s only when we have attended the site for the in-depth, free-of-charge survey that we can recommend any points that you may need to do. This can take various forms, from a simple quick clear of clutter to removing shrubs and bushes that are providing harbourage and shelter for pests. But again, no two sites are the same, and understanding the site and its requirements is key to a successful pest control process.

How long will it take to resolve the issue?

It depends on the particular situation. We can confirm this after we have carried out a free, no-obligation site evaluation.

Are there any guarantees?

Yes. We provide either a one, or three-month guarantee depending on the treatment method used. We also guarantee that all work will be carried out by a BPCA certified pest control technician.
